Spoon-billed Sandpiper

The Spoon-billed Sandpiper is a small, critically endangered wader which breeds in north-eastern Russia and winters in southern Asia. In 2016, the global population was estimated to be around 200 pairs. The main threats to its survival are habitat loss due to climate breakdown on its breeding grounds, loss of tidal mudflats due to reclamation on its migration route, and hunting within both its migratory and wintering range.

The Sandpiper’s most distinctive feature is its black spatulate bill from which it gets its name. It feeds in a distinctive style, sweeping its bill from side to side as it walks, sifting through silty waters for invertebrates to feast on.

A critical part of the conservation programme to save this bird has been the education and provision of alternative livelihoods for bird hunters in the wintering grounds in Myanmar and Bangladesh, where the Sandpiper is a victim of ‘bycatch’ in the nets targeting larger waders for subsistence hunting.
