It was not permissible for two persons of the same surname to marry. Rules for the ways to test clerks are given in recently discovered texts of laws of 186 BCE. Instruments used for divining that depend on coincidences of the calendar and astronomical cycles have been found in a number of tombs. Some calendars carried a key character, such as jian, from time to time to indicate a day of special importance in a somewhat esoteric series of dates, auspicious or inauspicious.
