Chapter Ten

The walls of the old Graves mansion throb to thunderous applause as I take the stairs two at a time off the stage. “You.” Mom takes my hand and ushers me off to a dark corner. “Your speech made me cry.”

“Everything I said tonight was true,” I say, kissing her on the cheek. “I don’t know where we’d all be if you and Dad hadn’t adopted us. We probably would’ve been split up and scattered across the country.”

Of all the causes my family supports, the Bowties and Diamonds Jubilee is the one closest to my heart. Proceeds from tonight will go to the Parker Brothers Foundation for Child Welfare, an organization we created to give financial assistance to parents who keep siblings together and adopt more than one.

“Huck and I are the lucky ones,” she says, dabbing her glistening blue eyes. “In so many ways, we’re all truly lucky.”

“Couldn’t agree more.” I wrap my arms around her for a bear hug. I mean, who the hell adopts seven kids? We weren’t even blood related. My birth father was Huck’s brother. Loretta didn’t need to jump on board, but as soon as my parents died, she went all in to give me and my siblings the best life possible and all the love in the world.

I raise my brows and study her, looking for signs of exhaustion. She’s been working nonstop, putting her heart and soul into this event. “And the venue is absolutely perfect,” I tell her.

“You like?” She turns, making her sequined gown glitter as she admires the castle-like ballroom. This old mansion was on its way to being leveled. When Mom joined the Historical Society, she donated over a hundred grand and worked countless hours to restore this place to its former glory.

Still, West Palomino is hardly the party capital of the world, and I’m touched so many of our friends and supporters flew in for our event. The West brothers didn’t have to travel far, their ranch is just up the road, but they’re all here. Chase West, who’s pretty famous for the movie Ride ’em Hard, donated twenty grand for his table, and I won’t forget it.

“Come, they’re seating everyone for dinner.” Mom tucks her hand through the crook of my elbow, and we wade through the crowd of black tuxedos and shimmery ball gowns.

All my siblings are here. Judge only has two days before he’s back on the road with his team. When baseball season is over, he’ll move here instead of going back to Texas. Same goes for Rhett, who has three concert dates left on his tour. I’m looking forward to hearing him play a quick set later.

Blade and Annalisa cut their honeymoon short as promised, but their lovefest is still in full swing. They haven’t been able to keep their hands off each other all night. I chuckle to myself. It’s rare the gang’s all together.

Mom and I reach our table, and my eyes immediately find Nicolette. She looks edible tonight. She glances up as I slide in next to Dad across from her.
