CHAPTER SEVEN
Jess groaned, rolled over, and squished her eyes shut from the bright sunshine. âUgh,â she mumbled as she pulled a pillow over her face. Her head pounded and her mouth was as dry as the hard packed Texas ground. This was why sheâd given up drinking.
âJess.â Hunterâs sleep-roughened voice stopped her movements.
Oh, hell, no. With dread filling her heart, she pushed the pillow off her face and opened her eyes to see Hunter leaning on one elbow, gazing down at her, his thick hair tousled, his chest bare, and...they were in bed together. His bed.
âHoly crap.â She pulled the pillow back over her face. No, she couldnât have slept with him. Could she? She fought back the rising tide of nausea as she thought back to last night.
Beer. Dancing. Her and Hunter dancing. Kissing on the dance floor, then that kiss by his truck. A shiver swept up her body along with embarrassment. Sheâd taunted him in the truck, tracing his hardness as he drove. She remembered feeling giddy when he carried her from the truck to his bedroom. He placed her on the bed and then...nothing. Her mind was blank.
She groaned again as her stomach somersaulted. How long had it been since sheâd gone on a beer binge? Probably since college. She obviously wasnât able to hold her alcohol like she used to.
âAre you alive under there?â A corner of the pillow lifted.
âNo, Iâm dead.â If she was dead she wouldnât have to face him.
âShall I join you?â
Was that humor in his voice? âAbsolutely not.â She threw the pillow in his direction and instantly regretted it as her stomach rebelled.
âNot quite yourself this morning?â The amusement in his voice danced over her nerves.
âUnderstatement of the year.â She glared at him while willing her stomach to calm down. How dare he sit there looking like a cat who caught the bird. Her head hurt and her mouth tasted awful.
âWhy donât you have a quick shower while I fix us some breakfast?â The mattress dipped as he rose.
The mere thought of food caused nausea to rise in her throat, but if it would get him out of the room, sheâd agree to it. âA cup of coffee would be nice.â
âCoffee and food. You need to eat.â He sauntered around the bed and her heart pounded. Her eyes wandered over his shirtless torso and down to his jeans. Jeans? Oh, thank goodness. She forced herself not to back away when he leaned down.
âAt breakfast you can tell me just where you learned to please a man like you did me last night.â He dropped a quick kiss on her lips before strutting out of the room.
Oh crap, oh crap, oh crap. Jess sat up and pulled the sheet around her near naked body. Wait a second, near naked? She still had her panties on. Had they made love? Her head spun. Carefully she climbed out of bed and made her way into the bathroom.
She turned on the shower, took off her underwear, and climbed in.
