The Biggest Little Truckstop was obviously a happening place.

Harper knew that Starwood advertised itself as home of The World’s Biggest Truck. The monstrous thing sat in the centre of an open lot like something out of a kid’s movie, dwarfing the tourists gathered all around it taking photos.

And someone brilliant had capitalized on it and started a diner next to it. Within walking distance was the Library, where Joanne had her daycare.

Quinn escorted her into the café. The place was noisy and full, the smell intoxicating. It felt inviting and friendly. Western music played. A pretty waitress with pink hair and a rounded pregnant belly smiled and waved at them.

Harper paused just inside the door, taking in the décor. A big wooden sign on the wall said, “SIT LONG, TALK MUCH, EAT LOTS.”

A huge blackboard announced the daily specials, Pik-Axe Pasties, Blaster’s Soup, Coal-Car Charlie’s Stew, Maisie’s Cheesecake, PickN’Shovel Pie. Try Our All-Day Breakfast.

The names were a brilliant marketing idea for a coal town truck stop.

“Hey Quinn, there’s a table for two at the back by the window,” the waitress called, deftly serving loaded plates of food for a table of eight.

“Thanks Stella.” Quinn led the way to the small table, half hidden by a gigantic pot of sunflowers.

“Wow, this is an amazing place. Especially for a small town.” Harper was staring around, admiring the original wildlife art on the walls, the efficient way the waitress served, cleared, greeted customers. She felt a pang of envy.

“I’d love to add great pub food at the Whiskey-Jack, paint the walls, put up some art. Give it some character. Maybe if Brad’s out of the picture—”

“You said you owed him money?”

Harper nodded. “Yeah. I’ve paid off a lot of it, but he keeps adding on interest.”

“You’ve kept records of how much you’ve paid?”

“Of course.”

“Like Luke said, you need a lawyer. Why don’t you give Jane Shepard a call? I’ll drive you over there after lunch if she has time to see you.”

Things were moving almost too fast. Harper dug her cell phone out. A friendly male voice said that Ms. Shepard had an opening at one-thirty.

Harper confirmed the appointment just as the waitress came to take their order.

“Stella Montague, this is Harper Goodman,” Quinn said.

Stella handed them menus and then reached out a hand and shook Harper’s. “Welcome to the Biggest Little,” she said with a wide smile that took her from pixie cute to beautiful. “You just visiting, Harper?”

A short time ago, she’d have been convinced that Stella was a spy for Brad. Harper only realized now just how paranoid she’d been.

“Yeah, just visiting.” It had been a pretty tumultuous visit, too.

“Quinn, you decided yet whether you’re going fishing with Chad next weekend? Because if you’re not, I’ll get the paint for the baby’s room.”

“Not going to be able to make it,” Quinn said. “Somethings come up.” His eyes twinkled with mischief. “Really sorry to let you down, Stella. I know you were counting on him being away.”

“NOT.” She punched his shoulder and held two thumbs up.
