Teresa pulled back from the kiss and caught her breath. She looked up at Derek, then down at his shirt, feeling self-conscious now that the moment had passed.

Such an unexpected moment.

A really good unexpected moment.

His cheeks had taken on a pink cast, which made her a little less embarrassed. They stood there, neither sure how to break the silence. Derek reached down and entwined his fingers through hers. She looked at their clasped hands and then up, meeting his gaze.

She smiled, then stepped to the side, tugging for him to follow. When they reached her favorite spot—a slightly raised, stair-like ledge—she sat and tugged again. He took the spot next to her. The rock stair was plenty wide for them both, so he sat at her side, which was fine as far as she was concerned.

The stone was cool, not having been warmed by the sun yet. The chill sent a shiver through her, and Derek responded by putting his arm around her shoulders, which was just as good as, or better than, holding his hand.

They had yet to say a word since their kiss. Or was that kisses, plural? What exactly counted as one kiss? Maybe she should think of it as their kissing, not a kiss or multiple kisses …

She rested her head against his shoulder; Derek was the perfect height for that. Too bad he’s going to make me homeless and unemployed. This would be almost perfect if not for that.

“I, uh … I’m sorry for back there,” he said.

Oh no. He thought her silence meant she didn’t want the kiss. The kisses. Their kissing. Warm butterflies swooped through her.

“No, don’t apologize,” she insisted.

His arm and chest noticeably relaxed. “Really?” Then he turned his face to the side to look at her straight on. She lifted her head from his shoulder and looked at him. As before, their faces—and their lips—were very close. She wanted to kiss him again—really wanted to—but didn’t have the guts to initiate so soon.

“Really,” Teresa said. “No reason to apologize …” She nodded toward the spot they’d been standing during all the awesome, toe-curling kissing. “For that.”

He tensed slightly. “Should I be apologizing for something else?” His tone said that he already knew the answer, but that wouldn’t stop her from trying to change his mind about the sale.

Teresa wrapped her arms around her raised knees. “Look out there,” she said, staring into the distance ahead. “The land. The ranch. The nature. The beauty. The animals. All of it.”

For several seconds, he didn’t turn to look. She could feel his stare, so she waited for him to change his focus. Eventually, he acquiesced, slowly turning to look forward. But at the same time, his arm dropped from her shoulders. She immediately felt the absence, and for more reasons than the warmth it had provided.

Derek rested his forearms on his knees. “I can’t count the number of times I’ve looked out there,” he said finally. “At everything you said. It’s home to me more than any other place has been.
