Elena spent a few hours with Marcus, then went to her parents’ house to have dinner, as she had promised her mother.

After their meal, Luigi went out on some meat deliveries, leaving Elena and Louisa alone.

“I never want to go through that again,” Louisa said. “It was terrifying to see Marcus on the floor thrashing around. I thought he was dying.” Her voice trembled with emotion.

“It must have been a terrible shock for you, Mama,” Elena said. She could see how shaken Louisa was. She knew her own shock hadn’t yet set in.

“I’m sure your boy will be fine, so don’t worry, Elena,” Louisa said. “You have enough to worry about with the life you have. And where is that husband of yours? Does he not want to visit his son in hospital?” Louisa knew she shouldn’t criticise her son-in-law, but she was too upset to hide her true feelings.

“I’m glad he didn’t come, Mama. He would only have upset Marcus by telling him he can’t play cricket any more.”

“What! Why not?”

“Aldo feels he should be concentrating on the farm,” Elena said.

“The farm! He’s just a boy. He should have a childhood, and that childhood should include sports.”

“I agree,” Elena said. “I don’t know what’s wrong with Aldo sometimes.”

“I should never have suggested that you marry that man, Elena.” Louisa made the sign of the cross and looked to the heavens. “God forgive me,” she muttered, glancing towards the door for fear her own husband might overhear. “I know I thought it best, but he has not been a good husband for you,” she added. She knew Luigi would not permit such talk. Although he wasn’t especially fond of Aldo, he respected him as a man, and as Elena’s husband. He’d also never admit to a mistake. That was the way he was.

“I fear my past is going to catch up with me, Mama,” Elena whispered. “If the doctors start investigating family histories, it might come out that Aldo is not my son’s father.”

“Hush, Elena,” Louisa whispered with wide eyes. “You must not say things like that.”

“It could happen,” Elena said. She had dreaded the day, but she had always feared it would come.

“No, it won’t. This is just one of those things. You will see. There is nothing to worry about,” Louisa assured her.
