Woken by an unearthly howl just before dawn a few Sundays later, I wonder at first if my mother is having a nightmare. But the howl is too high-pitched, and it seems to come from outside. The garage light flickers on. I open the front door to find my father standing at the rear of his car, looking down at a dark mess on the ground.

I walk towards him, smell wine and confusion on his breath. He’s just driven too fast up the driveway. The dark mess he looks at is Sweety-Pie. She is silent, unbreathing, her lower body mangled and bloody.

‘Go back to bed,’ my father mutters to me, grabbing the spade.

From my bed, I hear him digging a hole in the garden. I lie listening to the damp earth falling, and the first birds singing the cat into the ground.
