Chapter Sixteen

Sasha apologized to Bret at school earlier today. She told him that she hopes he will have a lot of fun at his birthday party tonight, but she wouldn’t be able to make it. He seemed to take it hard at first, but when a fellow student grabbed Bret’s attention telling him how Bret was going to love the gift his mother had purchased for him the night before, Bret floated away with a smile on his little face as if her presence no longer matters.

She has plans for this Friday night. Over the past several weeks, Sasha has been laying low; she promised her sister she would chill out and that she has done so far. For at least three hours, Cameron will be occupied and away from his home. The snow started to melt almost completely a few days ago. Now is the perfect time for Sasha to do a little snooping. They had the security system taken out while Charity was still there alone and Sasha prays that Cameron hasn’t added a new one, not that she plans on actually breaking in.

It has been hell on her trying to stay away. She has kept contact with Detective Gonzalez to a minimum, only calling him once a week. Rylie, the guy Lena set her up with, has helped to keep her mind occupied. They’d gone on a double date, and her sister had not lied—he is very charming. Even though she does like him, she still decides to blow him off tonight. He wants to take her out for what would have been their fourth date. Sasha told him she has a school function that she just can’t get out of and asked for a raincheck. Sasha was surprised at how easily the lie fluttered from her lips. She was even more surprised that he accepted it without question.

The invitation says that the party starts at five and ends at seven. Dusk is scheduled to arrive at 6:48 pm, so she grabs a flashlight from her truck before leaving her car hidden amongst the trees about half a mile past Cameron’s estate. As she walks along the trail that leads to the back of the massive house she used to visit frequently, a sense of unease starts to creep up her spine. She hadn’t checked to make sure the house had been fully vacated, and now she isn’t sure if approaching the property like this is the best idea.

Rounding a large bush, she peeks at the drive. Cameron’s car is not there, and he never parks that old Jeep in the garage. She also doesn’t see the rental car Loretta has been driving. Of course, Loretta could have gone home by now or might have ridden with Cameron. Either way, she figures they are both gone. Sasha finally gave up on Loretta after several messages and texts went unanswered and after their disappointing and uneventful dinner. She’d been hoping to find an ally in Loretta, but that turned out not to be the case.
