I change out, not even bothering to shower, and rush out of the locker room. The temperature is dropping and I’ve no doubt Ryan’s probably freezing at this point. Sure enough, when I reach the bleachers, Ryan is leaning forward as if trying to wrap himself in a little ball.

“Hey, Cutie. Ready to go inside?” I bend down to grab Ryan’s bag, tossing it over my shoulder.

He stands, teeth chattering, holding his book to his chest like a shield. “I should have brought a blanket and gloves. Maybe even a coffee.” I ruffle his hair, pressing a kiss to his crown, and pull his shivering body into my side.

“Come on, let’s get you inside. I can get you some coffee in the cafeteria.”

He sighs, nuzzling his nose into the armpit of my hoodie.

“You smell like grass and sweat.” His words are muffled from the fabric, but I hear them just fine.

“Sorry. I didn’t shower, felt bad leaving you out here.”

“No, I like it. Smells good. Like you, only more rugged.” He inhales once more before pulling away and wrapping his book-free arm around my waist. That’s how we walk to the cafeteria. Leaning into one another, talking about how classes were today, and upcoming assignments. It’s nice, easy, and way different than I ever expected a relationship to be.

There’s something about being with him that changes my entire view on dating. He makes me feel things. Things I never thought I’d want. This companionship is different from what I have with Rhys, Winston, or Greg. It’s hard to even explain, but it’s more. He makes me see things from another perspective, and makes me feel valid and important. Like I’m more than just the cocky jock I claim to be.

He’s burrowed beneath my facade and I feel defenseless against him and all the feelings he’s pulling from me. I have to admit, I’m terrified. I don’t do this and yet, when we’re together, I find myself staring into his chocolate-brown eyes and I want to give him everything. Every single piece of me.

I grab the door to the cafeteria, pulling it open and the rush of warmth hits us instantly. I feel Ryan relax beside me as the cold dissipates from his body.

“Now this is more like it. Why can’t you guys practice inside? Like in the gym or something? I’d come watch you play every day then.” His voice comes out wistful and I laugh at his expression.

“The gym’s too small. We need enough room to move around.”

“Well, that’s lame. Don’t you freeze when you're out there?”

“Not really, once we get moving and the blood’s flowing, you don’t even realize it's actually cold out.”

“That’s true, knowing me though, I’d still freeze to death. I did track at my last two schools and anytime we’d have meets during the winter I could literally feel my teeth chattering as I ran. Honestly, it made me run faster. The sooner I was done, the sooner I could put more clothes on.”

I chuckle, shaking my head at him, he’s too adorable.
