CHAPTER TWELVE

EVAN FELT GOOD. It took him a while to realize why. He was hard. Not the most unusual occurrence upon waking up, but he realized this was different.

There was a beautiful woman currently spooned in his arms. They weren’t supposed to be snuggling. That had been one of her napping rules, but apparently in their sleep they had gravitated together. For comfort. For warmth. Or just because they liked touching.

Not surprising as he was completely attracted to her, and despite her resistance he knew she felt the same. That they wanted each other wasn’t in doubt. What they were going to do about it was. It was no longer a matter of her being his agent, either. That seemed like the least of his problems.

Was it only last night he’d been declaring his intentions to make love to her? That seemed so long ago. A lifetime ago, really.

Because now it felt like everything had changed. He no longer felt like who he’d been yesterday: a single, unattached man interested in a woman he wanted to sleep with.

Today he was possibly a father. A father of a sick child.

Suddenly it all came back to him. Why he was asleep in the middle of the day, why Sam was in his arms. Why they had left Boston and their date to come back to Minotaur Falls.

Connor was sick. Whether he was Evan’s son or not, he felt a connection. A responsibility for the boy.

Any hope of starting a relationship was pretty hopeless. None of this was fair to Sam. His burden didn’t also need to be hers.

But he was hard, and the thought of kissing Sam’s neck and having her roll toward him and sinking himself deep inside her was making it more difficult to think about the reasons why he shouldn’t be doing just that.

He needed to get out of bed. Get away from her.

He needed to put his mouth just right there under her earlobe where her hair had fallen away and the skin looked so soft. He could only see that spot because she was lying in his arms.

One kiss. Just that spot. He was going to get out of the bed after that.

Promising himself he could be that disciplined, he leaned down toward her. A soft kiss on her neck. The press of his lips against her skin. The sleepy scent of her filling all his senses. It felt decadent.

She shifted, and he felt somewhat guilty for waking her up. Although the reality was the alarm was probably about to go off. Then she did what he’d fantasized about. Just rolled to him like they were two people who got up together on a regular basis. Like this was their leisurely Saturday morning ritual.

She made a humming sound in the back of her throat. Then when she opened her eyes and looked into his, he could tell the moment she realized where she was. Who she was with.

She didn’t push him away. She didn’t pull away, either.
