Chapter Eleven

“Did you get the same treatment from your mate I did?” Jason asked with a grin as Cyril gingerly sat down at the dining table. They were at Java’s restaurant in his hotel, and exactly as Java promised, Cyril had been tired enough to agree to sharing a meal with Jason instead of running around town looking for a magic user.

“I assume you’re referring to something along the lines of a hard ass pounding, a decadently long hot shower afterwards and a kiss hot enough to shrink my pants and melt my brain before Java left with your mate?” Cyril nodded as he rested his arms on the table. “I’m exhausted and ready for a meal, so yep.”

“You’re already learning about how these men of ours operate, which is a good thing.” Jason picked up his menu. “Do you fancy anything to drink?”

Cyril was happy to put off chatting about other things until they’d placed an order for food, and got their drinks delivered. “So,” Jason said, holding up his drink for a toast, “to your first day mated. How was it?”

“Long.” Cyril laughed as he took a sip of his drink. “Are you sure it’s only been one day? I feel like I’ve known Java forever already.”

“I guess it depends on when you consider your day started.” Jason chuckled. Cyril did find him really easy to be around. “But tell me, has Java been good to you so far?”

“Were you worried he wouldn’t be?” Cyril thought about the question. “I know people who share their spirit with another have more of a gut instinct about things, and I don’t have that.”

“No, but you have your own little woo woo instincts which are just as powerful, but in a different way.”

“True.” Cyril nodded. “I think I did Java a disservice this morning by leaving instead of waiting for him to get up. That seemed to upset him somehow. Like, when we had lunch later, while you and Raoul were visiting George, he really acted like he’d done something wrong when he hadn’t.”

Glancing around to make sure they weren’t being overheard, Jason leaned over the table and said quietly, “Raoul’s much the same. I think it’s because he and Java weren’t born human with an animal spirit like shifters are. They’re made hellhounds.”

“But they’ve lived as human for a long time, haven’t they? That’s the impression I got. Java said he’d lived here in Plaka since the nineteen fifties.” Cyril looked up as a shadow alerted him to the waiter’s presence, leaning back so his plate could be delivered.

Jason waited until the waiter was satisfied that they were satisfied, and they’d both taken their first mouthfuls of food before he answered. The beef bourguignon was truly delicious. “From what I can gather, and you have to understand our mates are a bit vague on some specifics, I think they’ve been wandering around as humans for well over a thousand years, possibly longer.”

“It’s difficult to imagine being alive that long – all the changes you would live through.
