~ Tessa ~

“Hey Megan,” I say as I approach her desk, swinging my bag over my shoulder.

“Hey, Tessa. Are you heading out?” she asks, her fingers typing away at a million miles an hour.

I admire a lot of things about Megan. I especially like how she caters to Ryder’s every professional need without a moment’s hesitation and knows precisely what he wants even more than he knows himself. Whether it is lunch, the thermostat setting, or specific files he’s looking for. Megan is also a master at multitasking, typing documents, talking on the phone, and keeping a clear head through it all, always with a smile on her face. I’m pretty sure she’s superhuman.

“Is Mr. Mahoney in?” I ask.

“Why? You and he have a hot date?” she asks.

I would open my mouth to respond, but I’m too shocked to do so. Does Megan know about us? I wouldn’t be surprised since she’s highly observant and intelligent. It would be a miracle if she didn’t know about us. But instead of freaking out, like I inwardly am, I remain focused and relaxed on the outside, as difficult as it may be.

“I’m kidding,” she says luckily and begins to chuckle. “God, Tessa. You need to lighten up.”

“Yeah, sorry,” I sigh and run my fingers through my hair. “It’s been a long day. I was supposed to drop by his office. He wanted to talk to me about something. But I haven’t had the time.”

“Oh yeah? He didn’t mention anything to me.”

“Maybe it just slipped his mind since he’s so busy with the launch and all that.”

“Yeah, maybe,” Megan says, looking at me a little suspiciously. “Unfortunately, he’s not in right now. He’s out for a long lunch.”

“With who?” I ask. “I mean, he doesn’t normally have lunches away from the office, especially not such long ones.”

Megan narrows her eyes and says, “Are you training for my job, Tessa? Because that is some next-level observance skills right there.”

I shrug my shoulders and try to stay calm. “I guess you’re rubbing off on me.”

“That’s good to hear unless you really are after my job,” she says.

“I wouldn’t dream of it. Besides, you’re superhuman. I could never do what you do.”

“I will graciously accept that compliment. Thank you,” she smiles at me. “And if you must know, he didn’t tell me who he’s having lunch with.”

“What?” I ask. “He tells you everything.”

“I was as shocked as you are. But I guess he’s allowed to have secrets.”

“I guess. We all have them,” I shrug nonchalantly.

“You don't think he’s seeing someone, is he?”

I swallow the lump in my throat and ask, “Why would you think that?”

“Well, he’s been more secretive than usual, with little things, you know. He’s also asked Oliver to disconnect the cameras on the penthouse floor, and he usually does that when seeing someone. Casually, of course. Ryder hasn’t had a long-term girlfriend in a while, so if he is seeing someone, then good for him,” she says.

“It gets pretty lonely, I’ll admit.”

“How long has it been for you?” Megan asks.
