Prague’s cultural calendar is an extremely busy and ever-changing one, and as such impossible to give full details of here. For up-to-date listings and information, the Prague Post is the best source. However, as a guide and to help you plan your trip, here are some of the major annual events taking place both in the city and across the country.

May Prague International Marathon (dates vary from year to year).

May–June Prague Spring Festival (Pražské jaro; www.festival.cz): one of the world’s best classical-music festivals, with performances by celebrated musicians at major venues throughout the city.

June Smetana National Opera Festival (Litomyšl; http://festival.smetana-litomysl.com). Festival of the Five-petalled Rose (www.slavnostipetilisteruze.eu): falconry, fire-throwing and target-jousting in Český Krumlov. Tanec Praha Contemporary Dance Festival (www.tanecpraha.cz): foreign and Czech dancers collaborate.

July Rock for People Festival: open-field music concerts (www.rockforpeople.cz). International Film Festival at Karlovy Vary (www.kviff.com). Summer Festivities of Early Music (www.letnislavnosti.cz).

July–August Italian Opera Festival. Displays of music and dance in traditional costume.

August The Chopin Music Festival (www.chopinfestival.cz): held at venues throughout Bohemia.

September–October Live Cafés (Kavárny naživo; http://kavarnynazivo.cz) concerts, theatre performances, and other art projects in various cafés thorought the city.

October International Jazz Festival Praha (www.jazzfestivalpraha.com).

November Prague Writers’ Festival (www.pwf.cz): talks and book signings with internationally renowned authors. Prague German-language Theatre Festival (www.theater.cz).

December Advent and Christmas-time activities such as craft markets, carol concerts and an open-air arts festival.

31 December Spectacular New Year celebrations across the city.
