When to Eat
Breakfast (śniadanie) is usually eaten between 7am and 10am. Poles, including the inhabitants of Kraków, favour a cold breakfast, typically of bread, cheese, ham and a little salad. Hot breakfast, including an omelette, is gaining popularity and will be found on all but the cheapest hotel breakfast menus. Hotel breakfasts in general are undergoing a much-needed overhaul, with cold buffets being replaced with a more international style. Tea is taken without milk.
Lunch (obiad) starts from as early as 11am and can go on until around 3pm. Business lunches are becoming more and more popular. For most Poles, dishes are basic, with a three-course meal made up of a simple soup with plenty of white or rye bread, a main course consisting of usually meat and plenty of cabbage, and a simple dessert. Alcohol is generally not drunk during lunch.
Dinner (kolacja) is eaten between 6pm and 9pm. Meals tend to be similar to those eaten at lunchtime. Poland is a nation of traditionalists, and dinnertime remains a home-based family affair. As Western standards continue to influence Polish culture, going out for dinner is becoming more popular.
