A fortnight later, Anna had yet to receive a reply. She had long ago learned to overcome the feeling of rejection when a prospective publisher turned down one of her photos, but this was different. Her immediate fear was that the offer made by Herr Doktor Goebbels that evening at the Alexanderplatz had been nothing but polite conversation. In her head was the image of a minor functionary stuffing her photographs into a waste bin deep in the bowels of the Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda.

Anna was beginning to give up hope when an invitation arrived by Ministry courier for her to join the official press party attending a tour of the futuristic new passenger terminal at Tempelhof airfield.

Less than ten minutes later, after calling the telephone number on the card, Anna walked to the mailbox at the end of the street and posted a letter. It was addressed to Mr H Taverner, Passport Control Office, British Embassy, Vienna.

Dear Harry,

Sorry about the short notice. I’ve decided my interest in photography should take a new course. If you are able to come to Berlin again soon, I would be grateful for your guidance. My turn for the hot chocolate and brandy.
