Chapter Twenty-One
âSañar.â
Looking up from her late brunch, Bertrada Nijmege glanced at the interruption. One of the servants stood at her elbow, a tray in one hand. The item on it seemed incongruous with the surroundings of her dining room, which duplicated Victorian splendor to the finest detail.
Her scowl served to enhance her bird of prey features as she set her knife and fork aside to take the cellular phone. Needing no order to leave, the servant whisked away, closing the door quietly behind him.
âHello?â
âItâs her.â
Bertrada sat forward in her chair, eyes sharpening. âYouâre certain?â
âYes. Thereâs no doubt.â
She slumped against the back of her chair, closing her eyes for a moment. The bitch is back. A distant part of her chortled at hearing the old pop song, doubting it had been written for such an occasion.
âSañar?â
Bertradaâs eyes opened, not seeing the room before her. Instead, the old Agrun Nam hall hovered in her vision, the one that none of them had set foot in since Elisibetâs death. Faintly, she heard the echoes of her belovedâs screams as the flesh was stripped from his body before them, heard the questions put to him in that detestable honeyed voice.
âSañar, are you still there?â
âDoes she remember?â
There was a pause. âIâm not certain.â
âDo you think sheâll develop any memory?â
âAgain, itâs uncertain. That sheâs even returning is unheard of. Weâre not aware of anyone who has.â The caller stopped talking for another few moments. âIt could be that she wonât become the Sweet Butcher again.â
Bertradaâs eyes hardened. âRegardless, sheâll pay for her crimes if I have to kill her every time she bloody well shows up.â
âYes, Sañar.â
She sighed, rubbing the bridge of her beaky nose. âHow long before youâll know for certain?â
âUnknown. Kiâan Gasan Margaurethe has made things⦠difficult.â
âMargaurethe.â Bertrada cursed. âSheâll be trouble.â
âI know, Sañar. Iâve a few ideas on how to keep her occupied.â
âGood. Implement them. As soon as you can, bring this...person before the Agrun Nam. Weâll take it from there.â
âWe, Sañar?â
âWho my allies are does not concern you.â Bertradaâs voice sounded furry with rage. âDonât overstep yourself.â
âYes, Sañar.â
She suppressed her fury, knuckles white on the phone. âCall me when you have further information.â Hitting the disconnect button, she forced herself to set the phone gently on the table rather than throw it across the room. Her teeth had extended during the conversation, and she wished she could see the Sweet Butcher now, taste her flesh and blood as she tore Elisibetâs throat out.
Time ticked past as Bertrada regained control of her emotions, her breathing coming easier. Inhaling deeply, she let the last vestiges of her wrath fade away. Soon. Thwarted by the Agrun Nam, her personal revenge had been put aside for the expediency of Valmontâs solution. It would not happen again.
âI will have you, Elisibet.â
