WHEN I WAS A kid, from time to time my parents would argue. If the argument got deep enough, my dad would turn beet red and yell something smart like, “For the love of Christ!” Then he’d slam the door and storm out of the house. He would walk around the neighborhood for a while, maybe twenty minutes, and then come home and inevitably say he was sorry. My mom was quiet but firm in her convictions (it helped that she was usually right) and my dad knew when to fold. Flynn and I generally stayed out of the fray, but one time I sided with my mom in some sort of disagreement, and I secretly flipped my dad off as he walked away. My brother caught me.
