TWENTY-FOUR

Sunday, 3:00 p.m.

Inglewood

Grayson fidgeted. It would’ve been barely visible to most people and was certainly out of character for him. He’d become adept at not showing any form of emotion. In his line of work, becoming emotional or falling out of character could not only result in his death, but the death of others on his Gray Fox team. It was also for that reason he’d never been able to maintain a long-term relationship. Women he dated wanted more from him than his good looks and chiseled body. They needed a connection. Emotion. Humor. But, most importantly, commitment. Grayson couldn’t do that because on any given mission, he could die.

Emmy saw him twist his hands and flex his fingers on the steering wheel. Grayson wasn’t trying to release any tension. She’d never seen him nervous or anxious. Even when she’d held those young men at gunpoint, Grayson didn’t overreact. He’d simply raised his rifle, and his steely blue eyes had remained laser-focused on the men resting on their knees, prepared for them to make a wrong move.

She immediately regretted pressing their friend and neighbor. They all had dark secrets that were only theirs to tell. However, in this new apocalyptic life they seemed to be headed toward, Grayson was the one constant, levelheaded voice of reason and strength. And he also seemed capable of killing if the situation called for it. Twice, he’d walked into a dangerous situation and came out with another kill to notch on his belt. Five, by Emmy’s count.

She tried to let him off the hook by focusing on finding Dean. She uselessly pointed out an upcoming landmark that dictated they turn left. She was sure Grayson knew what to do, but she wanted to break the silence to avoid putting him on the spot. The longer they drove, and as the silence between them grew, Emmy regretted pressing him.

Then he spoke for the first time in ten minutes. “I consider you and Dean to be my closest friends. Sure, I have buddies I grew up with back in Georgia, but when I decided to plant my roots in Malibu, I got lucky to land next door to y’all.”

“We feel the same way, Grayson. Dean has had many acquaintances, including Judson. However, you are the one guy he’d feel genuine remorse over if you moved away.”

“Even if I told you that I’ve been lying about who I am for years?”

“Yeah, even that. I mean, if your name isn’t Grayson McCall, big deal. Truthfully, we wouldn’t care if you were an axe murderer. Just remind me to hide the axe when we get home.”

Grayson burst out laughing, instantly relaxing his body as he drove. He smiled at Emmy and nodded. He was ready to talk now.

“Okay, here’s the thing. I’m not in corporate sales or account management or any other of those jobs that y’all think I have when I travel. I’ve always found it interesting that neither one of you have ever asked me direct questions about what my work entails.
