chapter eight

I remember at that moment thinking that he really did belong on a movie magazine cover. He had that sparkle and glow about him that I saw in pictures of Mother’s celebrities. She always said some people were simply photogenic. “They can’t take a bad picture no matter how you surprise them.” Lee was that sort of person.

I wondered if I was so infatuated with him only because Gloria seemed to be. I was thinking so hard about all this while I looked at him that I didn’t see Gloria or anything else, for that matter, just him. After a moment, I realized Gloria was staring at me with an amused smile on her face. Was my infatuation with him so obvious? Did he see or sense it, too? He crossed over to my side after Gloria handed him a racket, his eyes so fixed on me that I couldn’t move for a moment.

As I started away, he reached out to seize my arm.

“How are you feeling today, Gish? First hangover?” he asked, with an annoyingly amused smile. I hated being thought of as a younger girl, a naive and overly protected one as well.

“I’m fine. Don’t get gray hairs and wrinkles over it,” I said, and joined Gloria.

“I’m in great danger,” he joked.

I looked at Gloria.

“Lee, let’s play,” she said.

“Right, boss.”

He served the birdie, and I slammed it back so fast and hard he didn’t have a chance of returning it.

“Whoa. Guess you are feeling fine,” he said.

“Gish has a good return. Always,” Gloria said.

“I’d better remember that,” he said. He served again.

For the next twenty minutes or so, we had him running in every direction. We gave high fives to congratulate each other. He moaned and groaned about being victimized. His ego was a bit bruised. A few times, he really slammed it back, but overall, he couldn’t keep up with us. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Mr. O’Sullivan watching us with that familiar look of disapproval. Two spoiled rich girls.

“I think I’m outgunned,” Lee finally conceded. “Can’t beat the John sisters when they gang up on you.”

“We have some beer in the casita and some lunch,” Gloria told him. He took off his shirt and wiped his face with it.

“Better workout than basketball practice,” he said.

“We have a shower in the casita if you want to use it,” Gloria said.

I thought he was looking more at me. Maybe I was hoping. Seeing him shirtless revived the images I had conjured during Gloria’s description of their lovemaking.

He nodded at the casita. “Let’s check it out,” he said. He circled around our net and tapped me on the rear with his racket.

“You’re good,” he said. “I think I was playing against you mostly.”

“She’s always been more athletic than I am,” Gloria said as we started for the casita.

“I had no choice. My father wanted a boy he could wrestle,” I told him.

“Yeah. Your father was a college wrestler, right?”

“Into the finals,” Gloria said. “We have some trophies lost among the replicas of the Academy Awards,” she added, surprising me.
