Walk of Shame

Third Dark Day of Cantl, 819

Twenty-seven Days until Samhain

Cynbel has not asked to speak to me again, and though I am surrounded by druids, I have never been more alone. Cynbel’s people have been given their tasks, so no one is left to voice their hostility toward me. Only Arthmael, Ysella, and I are left at camp.

Judoc leads a pack of horses into camp. The horses walk right in front of us and rear up. The flax from their backs fall to the ground as each changes back into a druid.

“Just because you two have to watch him doesn’t mean you can’t store these bundles,” Judoc says. “No need to be idle while everyone else works.” He stretches his hurt arm and makes fake faces of being in pain. To my astonishment, Ysella buys the act. I turn away from them before I retch. Arthmael is starring daggers at me.

“You can do this part, as well,” he says.

“I would, but you have locked my arms in iron, and true druids like me have vowed to avoid using the cursed metal.”

“You’re horrible,” Ysella says as she pulls away from Judoc.

He shoots me a small triumphant smile before ordering his druids back to the fields. As one, they change into red kites and soar off to the east.

“I at least take my vows seriously.”

“Watch him while I open up the storage room,” Ysella says, stomping up the hill.

“Feel free to try to run; I need to practice for the gwary at the moot.”

“You need to practice against an unarmed and bound opponent? Your chances don’t sound all that promising to me.”

I plop down across from him and stare at the yellow seed pods on still-green stalks.

Ysella returns and they spend the rest of the morning stuffing the bundles in orderly rows.

“Clear out your homes,” Cynbel announces after lunch. “We leave as soon as the flax is safely stored.”
