Savannah changed into a pair of comfy lounge pants and an oversized tee shirt before heading downstairs to pour herself a glass of Chardonnay. Taking her glass and her phone outside, she lowered herself into one of the wooden Adirondack chairs on the porch and gazed out to where the river met the ocean. The Nanick Lighthouse blinked steadily from its perch at the northern tip of Star Island, guiding the incoming boats through the treacherous mouth.
The moon was rising on the horizon, full and golden and utterly magical. Settling back, Savannah sipped her wine as the moon slowly revealed itself, creating a river of buttery light on the surface of the water.
Where was Jed now?
Was he watching the moonrise, too? Savannah thought about those moments in the community pool, when he had supported her weight with no more than his flattened palm against her abdomen. Just the memory caused a rush of warmth through her veins that had nothing to do with the wine and everything to do with the massive crush she still harbored for him. She wanted to succeed at swimming, partly because she knew it was necessary, but also because she liked hearing Jedâs words of approval when she mastered a technique. He made her feel that maybe, after all these years and in spite of her fear, she really could learn to swim.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a small motor, and Erinâs boat materialized from the darkness and drew up to the dock. The solar dock lights provided some illumination as she secured the lines and then lifted several bags onto the pier.
âNeed any help?â Savannah called.
âNo, Iâve got it.â Stepping out of the boat, Erin hooked the handles of the shopping bags over one arm and made her way up the path to the porch. âWhat are you doing out here, all by yourself? Itâs Saturday night, I figured youâd be in town with your girlfriends.â
âI didnât feel much like going out,â Savannah said, not admitting that she hadnât heard from Mary or any of her other friends since the bridge had closed. Not that she would have gone even if they had extended an invite. The thought of crossing the wooden plank bridge at night unnerved her. Her bravado only extended to the daylight hours. What if Gus was right and the bridge collapsed with her on it? At least during the daylight hours there was a chance someone might see and come to her rescue. But at night⦠She gave a slight shudder. She knew firsthand how darkness had a way of turning the water black and impenetrable, so that you couldnât tell which way was up. No, thank you. Sheâd stay right here on her porch.
âI picked up some groceries,â Erin said, indicating the bags. âHave you had supper yet?â
âNo, I was going for a liquid diet tonight,â Savannah replied, raising her glass.
âDonât be silly. Iâll make us something to eat.â
Knowing Erin would refuse any offer of help, Savannah murmured her thanks.
