At the circus, called La grande nuit de Paris, Hedy was photographed draped in mink in the company of her Algiers costar Charles Boyer and with Ingrid Bergman, handing out autographs. Hedy was again photographed on July 6 with Edward G. Robinson as the two turned over the proceeds from the circus, 16,000,000 French francs ($75,000).

On Bastille Day, July 14, Hedy arrived back at New York’s Idlewild Airport and was the first one off the plane. She stayed again at Loder’s apartment while he was on Cape Cod performing in the play O Mistress Mine with Gertrude Lawrence. At this time Hedy had four people managing her career—Jerry Geisler, her attorney; Joe Schoenfeld, her agent; Harry Friedman at MCA, her business manager; and her publicist, Jay Steele.

Hedy reported to Paramount for photographic makeup tests on July 29. Apparently there were problems before initial shooting on Samson and Delilah had even begun. Hedy had been advised her wardrobe was to be created by the legendary Paramount costume designer Edith Head. Hedy balked. She preferred the work of Elois Jenssen, who had designed her wardrobe in Let’s Live a Little, to Head’s designs, and said so. Jenssen was brought over to Paramount from Warner, but, according to one insider, “Edith didn’t let her do anything.”36
