MY GRAMMY PASSES just after I flee from Gabriel. I move into her home to hide from him and mourn her passing. When I arrive at her house, I see an envelope with my name written in her graceful script. I open the seal and discover she left behind several of her poems for me typed on beautiful parchment. The series was dedicated to her lost lover, Bill, the man she sailed with around the world.

As I read each line, I can feel her with me. She left other gifts for me: several crystals, a woven guitar strap from South America, a lapis ring, and her favorite book—an emerald green, leather-bound copy of The Hobbit. Each sacred object soothes me as I release my life with Gabriel and miss Grammy deeply.

For about a week, I curl up with Rio in bed, reading her poetry and journals, speaking to her spirit, wrapping myself in her blankets. I wear her jewelry, drink her wine, and explore her photography. She comforts me in her passing to the other side. I rest and grieve in this house where she departed from her body. But her spirit does not leave me.

Not an angel or a traditional grandmother, Grammy was one sassy crone. But her love, even after physical death, nourishes me in my time of mourning. One day when I am searching through her belongings, I find defectors from eden, the book I wrote as a teen and dedicated to her.

On the cover she appears as a toddler, wearing a long white cotton dress, gazing at the light on her porch. The inscription reads,
