JOHN’S SIGNATURE AXE

In 1966 John purchased an Epiphone Casino, a thinline, hollow-bodied electric guitar with light-brown sunburst coloring. This would become his regular guitar once he put down the Rickenbacker, which had become shopworn. George, like John, bought himself a Casino, a red sunburst model with a Bigsby tremelo bar, which he (and John) used extensively during their second Asian tour. This actually made a total of three Casinos, since Paul had been using a 1962 Epi (a reversed right-handed model, of course) in the studio all along to play his electric guitar solos. The Casino would become the only guitar model used by all three Beatles. Paul had continued with his Hofner bass throughout the mid-1960s in concert, but he, too, wanted something with more punch while recording in the studio, especially for nailing that throbbing Motown beat. He was given a Rickenbacker bass direct from the California factory in 1965, which he used when he needed a big bottom on a song, which the Hofner couldn’t quite manage. The extra thump the Rick provided would define him as a superior bassist.
