Chapter Fourteen

Cole

“How technical is the trail?” I asked the woman at the front desk. “Do we need to be good mountain bikers?”

She shook her head, smiling. “Oh, no! There are some ups and downs, but older children do this tour.”

Quinn leaned on the counter and grinned at me. “If a kid can do it, hopefully, I won’t fall on my butt too many times.”

After my weight routine, I ran into Quinn, who had just finished a tour of the dive operation. When I explained I was heading to the lobby to set up a tour for that afternoon, he’d asked if Dawn and I wanted company.

The more, the merrier.

The buffer Quinn and Steph would provide might come in handy while Dawn and I danced around each other, so I readily agreed.

Now, we were nearly decided. “Can we do it on such short notice?” I asked the clerk.

“If you do a private tour with only four people, you can leave at any time. Shall I call and see if they can pick you up in an hour?”

I exchanged a look with Quinn, who shrugged. “That works. The girls are having lunch now. That should give me plenty of time to grab a sandwich.”

“Me too.” I turned back to the front-desk clerk. “Go ahead and call them.”

Five minutes later, we were booked. As I returned to our room, I grabbed a sandwich to go from the restaurant, noting Dawn and Steph were no longer there. When I entered the bungalow, Dawn sat in an armchair, reading.

“Hey. How were your yoga and lunch?”

She smiled at me, but her eyes were veiled. “Good. On both accounts. Did you figure anything out for this afternoon?”

“Yeah. I ran into Quinn, and he wanted to know if he and Steph could join us. I assumed that was okay with you, so we went up to the lobby together.”

“Sure. I like them a lot, and Steph had a similar idea. What are we doing?”

“A mountain bike tour. We leave in an hour. Fifty minutes, actually.” I sat across from her and unwrapped my sandwich before taking a big bite. Then I noticed Dawn hadn’t responded. I swallowed, lifting my eyes. “Something wrong? I thought you’d enjoy a bike ride.”

A red flush crept over her cheeks. “I would… normally.”

“I made sure the tour isn’t too gnarly. They said it’s suitable for older kids.” I took another bite. I’d eaten plenty of turkey sandwiches in my life, but this was awesome.

“It’s not that, Cole.”

I raised my brows at her as I chewed.

She pressed her lips tight together before blowing out a long breath. “I’m sore, okay?”

Swallowing, I thought about that. It didn’t make sense. “You haven’t worked out lately. Why would you be sore?”

She just stared at me, getting redder.

Then I got it and couldn’t help laughing. “Oh! That kind of sore.”

Flaming even redder, she nodded. “Yeah, that kind of sore. A bike seat might be a little uncomfortable. And stop laughing!”

I made a determined effort to rein it in. We were still on thin ice, and I didn’t want to make things any more awkward.
