Lowering himself onto the oak chair, Cole tipped it back on its two rear legs, and stared up at the kitchen’s popcorn ceiling, hating everything about it.

He wanted to take a sledge hammer to it right now and work out his frustrations. Get a good sweat up and get those endorphins pumping, helping him think clearly on what to do about Mitch, the boys and Annie.

The fight he’d just stopped between the boys and Peter’s taunt about fighting Josh forced him to give them time apart. But that wasn’t really a solution, it was just that, a time-out for all of them.

The annoying front doorbell pealed its antique series of cheesy chimes, then stopped.

Then pealed again.

The doorbell would have to go as well.

Cole didn’t feel like moving and certainly not answering the door. Maybe what he needed to do was seek out some help about the boys. Surely there were single parent groups he could attend?

What you really need is a good ear. And that would be Annie. Someone who understands kids. Hell, admit it, what you want is her smile, her whiskey eyes lighting up with joy. That woman radiated joy.

One more peal of the bell.

What the heck, maybe chatting with a neighbor or even a solicitor would take his mind off his failings.

Opening the door, the object of his needs stood there in a traditional ivory woolen ski sweater, skin-tight black leggings and boots. No jacket, no gloves, and it had to be all of three degrees outside.

“Annie.”

“Cole,” she said with a grin, then shivered.

He realized she carried a basket, with cellophane-wrapped somethings tied with ribbon nestled in the towel lining the wicker.

“I brought the boys some of my cookies and fudge. And for you, my infamous rum balls.”

Cole grabbed her arm and pulled her inside.

At her stunned look, a chuckle escaped him. Damn, it felt good after this last hour of drama.

Glancing at the staircase leading up to the second floor landing and not seeing any heads poking through the railings, Cole felt less guilty, then furious that he should feel any guilt at all over having Annie in the house.

Nevertheless, it was better if they moved into the kitchen so they could have a bit more privacy in case the boys decided to break their time-outs and investigate who had been at the door.

He took Annie’s basket and led the way into the kitchen. “You’re a sight for sore eyes. I’ve got coffee on, so we can sample those rum balls.”
