BAY

Smack! Smack!

“What the fuck, man? I’m a cop.”

Of course, I know he’s a cop. Not just a cop. The cop who’d practically assaulted Gerald while in his custody.

“I know who you are, you fucker. And I’m here to teach you a lesson.”

Smack!

I caught the punching bag to steady it, then wiped my sweaty brow with my arm. Fuck. It’d been two days since I’d trailed the cop from the police station to a bar where he’d been drinking, although he was supposed to be on duty. He hadn’t known what hit him when I landed the first punch to his gut. He’d puked up the beer he’d just downed on the sidewalk while I disarmed him faster than he could say “what.”

You’re welcome, citizens of Smoky Vale.

A tipsy cop with a weapon was a disaster waiting to happen. If he were smart, he would straighten out his attitude after the beating I’d given him. I hadn’t meant to break his nose. Never meant to rough him up to the extent I had, but in the bar, I’d overheard him bragging about the way he’d treated the former mayor.

“Gotta let him know he’s just a regular guy like one of us, you know.” He laughs and tips his beer to the bartender. “He should be glad I didn’t get to give him a full-body cavity search before we released him.”

Anger burned inside me, pushing me to deliver a round of punches to the punching bag. The muscles in my back contracted and relaxed with each aim. My breath came out of my body in short bursts, and my vision went black.

The cop’s face took the place of the punching bag. Fuck him. I should have killed the bastard. Then he wouldn’t get the chance to make another victim feel violated again.

At some point, I became aware that I was no longer alone in Gerald’s basement. How long had he been standing behind me? I didn’t immediately turn around. I took several deep breaths and worked on calming my breathing. He’d asked me about my bruised knuckles, and I’d lied about them. If he saw me this worked up, he would have questions.

“Bay, what are those men doing to my house?”

This I can handle.

I peeled the boxing gloves off and hung them on the arm of the elliptical machine. I’d been stoked to discover Gerald’s basement was full of gym equipment he had never used. According to him, he’d planned to use them. Eventually.

“They’re installing a security system.” Gerald looked much better now, but this situation with his ex still plagued him. He was itching to visit her to find out what she had him involved in, but he had to wait for his request to process.

“I don’t recall ordering any such service.”

“I did. It’s for your protection.”

“You don’t think it’s a bit much?”

“Nothing’s a bit much for you, Ger. I’d rather have you locked up in a fortress, knowing you’re fine, than to worry every minute I’m not with you.”

He swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing.
