Chapter 13

“It’s strange, Zun-wer, and to be honest, it’s often overwhelming,” I said, doing my best to shut out the seemingly ceaseless stream of thoughts and voices that were flooding through my head. “Sometimes I wonder if I’ve bitten off more than I can chew. And let me tell you, for creatures that are supposedly solitary by nature, it often feels like these dragons never shut up. Like right now! I feel like maybe I’m being ungrateful because being able to understand and converse in the Dragon Tongue has to be an immense blessing, but it’s starting to feel a little like a curse, too…”

“It is indeed a blessing, Leo,” Zun-wer said sagely. “And one that was bestowed on… you alone… the only man in all of history… to receive such a blessing. It was written… that the Dragon-Tiger… would converse with dragons in their tongue… as he would with his fellow men.”

“I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that it’s part of the prophecy. But, man, I really do wish I could just shut their voices out of my head for a few moments. We’ve been flying for a few hours now, and it feels like the dragons haven’t shut up for a single second that entire time!”

Zun-wer chuckled softly. “Like anything, Leo… you will become accustomed to it… and you will gain mastery over it… and become able to shut out the voices… when you need to. But for now… relish in this ability… for you are the only man, elf, dwarf, or goblin… in all of history… to possess this skill.”

I glanced over my shoulder, looking past the wise Tiger-Monk. Night had fallen hours ago, and for a while now, we had been cruising through the heavens. The full moon was out, and it bathed my inferno of dragons in its silvery light, which gleamed and glittered magnificently on their iridescent scales.

We were flying in a V formation, but instead of a single dragon leading, both Axlor and Graxx were flying alongside each other. Tension remained in place between the two of them, and it was a rivalry that I knew would not subside anytime soon, but I was determined to force them to get along.

Zun-wer was right about all of this being an immense privilege. And although the dragons’ constant chatter was maddening at times, if the alternative was not being able to understand them at all, I knew which option I would choose.

I dug in my pocket and retrieved the jewel I’d taken from Graxx—the jewel that allowed me to control the dragons. I hadn’t yet discovered much more about this wondrous item, but I could feel it slowly revealing its powers to me. It was almost as if it was a sentient being with a mind of its own—a curious thing to say about a piece of gemstone. But as odd as it was to think of an object in such terms, I simply couldn’t think of it in any other way. I felt as if the jewel was speaking to me, calling out to my very soul.
