Step One After the drawing was blocked in with graphite, a 1926 Carmine Red Prismacolor Art Stix (top) and a 1912 Apple Green Art Stix (bottom) were used to apply color in the large areas. These two colors match the Carmine Red and Apple Green of Prismacolor pencils. The paper is Stonehenge, which is a good surface for portraiture and also for minimizing the texture that lends to develop with any broad medium.
Notice in the illustration at left how the red runs over the line of the hair. Since the hair will be darker than the red background, the runover will not matter. The green at right, on the other hand, gives a wide berth to the placemat, which will be of a lighter color. The green will be brought to its final edge here with the point of a colored pencil.
For this drawing, I am keeping the values relatively unchanged. Values can be lightened or darkened somewhat with Art Stix, but when used flatly they don't have as wide a value range as the corresponding pencils.
Step Two Developing color with Art Stix is usually a two-step process. The stick is first used to quickly apply a layer of color, then a pencil is used to finish the layer.
In this case, I used corresponding pencil colors to refine the stick texture and to finish bringing color to some of the edges. I don't consider this pencil work a separate layer, but rather a smoothing out of any mottled or light/dark areas resulting from the stick.
