Infinite Difficulties

You could start from anywhere — from the inconceivability of the essence of the water’s surface, through the meaning, forever hidden from us, of vegetable and animal life, right up to the weighty error storm deriving from the cult of measurements, the main thing, thought the Professor — because right at that moment it was 3:41 p.m., even in his current circumstances he couldn’t leave off his thought-immunization exercises — the main thing is that I can attack these questions from any direction whatsoever, because I attack gravity, I attack the entire absurdity of the observation of time, and if I want to, I can also attack the trashy flea market of our ideas and throw these useless — albeit valuable-seeming — objects every which way in this flea market, they stand there in bales, he thought, on the disused grounds of the City Waterworks — the tens of thousands of misapprehensions stand there in enormous bales, and not all of them are so interesting, only the ones that sprawl out along the base of our cognition, and they smirk at us—after they’re certain that we’ve built them up so well that we’ve literally no chance of liberation — away with those bales! —it’s time now to go down to the fundament, to examine what has remained there of the essential, and in that way not just to attain, in this catastrophic world history of misapprehensions, the meaning of these misapprehensions, but to get to their use as well; the meaning of misapprehensions, thought the Professor, and their use, that could be a good title for his final book, which — before the one person worthy of reading it would chuck it straight into the garbage — would finally include the proposition of the one single valid thought, according to which there is no such thing as a valid thought: as our thoughts can be interpreted solely as manifestations of the human pan-organism and its functions, and only in terms of revolutionary biochemistry determined by a strongly genetic background, to think is the same as to act from instinct, it can either be good or bad, namely it’s all just ones and zeros, in other words: useful when perceived from the momentary desired result, and ruined when seen from the same viewpoint, and so forth, because to act from instinct is the same as not acting at all, but to leave off an activity in a given moment, to dare to go so far as to do that in a certain moment is the same as shutting down cognition in any given moment, by which I mean to say — thought the Professor — the question can be attacked from many points of view simultaneously, and by that we’re referring to intuition, well, of course — he cut a rather sour face — it all depends on whose intuition we’re talking about, are we talking about the intuition of Auntie Ibolyka or the intuition of the Buddha, because it’s
