“I saw you two kissing,” Nevaeh blurts, trying to keep her voice even. Her hand is draped around my shoulder as we make our way back to our hotel. “First, it was unbelievably hot. Second, you should’ve never asked him to play this game with you. Guys like him are rare diamonds, ones you find and keep secret from everyone, cherishing every fucking moment with him.”

“He’s a great friend.” I mutter the first thing that comes to my mind. Drake is a bit farther away from us, talking on the phone with his sister.

“Angie, do you really see him as a friend?” My steps falter, and I twist my ankle again. The pain isn’t as strong as it was the first time, but it still hurts. I close my eyes, my eyebrows pinching together. “Hey, what’s wrong?”

“I sprained my ankle a little. Nothing serious.”

Nevaeh gazes at me with a serious expression on her face. Then she glances at Drake and leans into my ear. “Interesting reaction to my question. I think the answer is no, and you’re mentally freaking out.” She pulls back, a triumphant smile on her lips. “You like your neighbor…or should I say your fake boyfriend.”

Instead of an answer, I wiggle out of her embrace and limp toward our hotel. My best friend follows me; her silvery laughter behind my back makes me squirm. She doesn’t need my answer. She already knows it. Nev reads me like an open book, and that’s why she doesn’t push the issue. I’m not ready for a relationship, and she knows it.

A guy like Drake doesn’t deserve a girl with as many unresolved issues as me.

I feel his presence even before I see him. His arm slips around my waist, and he pulls me to his side. “I left you for twenty minutes, and you already sprained your ankle.”

“It’s all because of me.” Nev sidles up to us, hurrying to open the door, and we walk inside the hotel. “She doesn’t like my questions.”

A smile ghosts over Drake’s lips. “The last time she sprained her ankle was when I was asking questions too.”

“Looks like my best friend doesn’t like interrogations.” Nevaeh giggles, proceeding to the elevator, and Drake makes us follow her. As the three of us step inside, she hits the number seven and then number eleven. “You’ve got the best room, by the way. I thought it would be fair.”

“Really?” I frown, eyeing her with doubt.

“Really, Angie,” Nev states, her gaze dancing between Drake and me, lingering on his hand on my waist. “I hope you make the most of it.” The door opens, and she sashays out, throwing a wink over her shoulder. “See you in the morning for breakfast. Don’t be late.”

“We will try,” I mumble, and the door closes again. The elevator moves higher. “How is your sister?”

Drake chuckles. “Layla is great. She got my niece in bed, poured herself some wine, and decided to call me…to ask a gazillion of questions.”

“Wow.” I exhale, hearing the door open.
