THIRTEEN

A figure ran past us and into the intense heat that was the small lizard.

A black shroud fell over Frank, casting the warehouse into darkness and immediately dissipating the heat.

The figure turned and Grey stared at us.

“What exactly were you two doing?” he said, seething. “Who said you could come in here guns blazing? Why didn’t you call me?”

“We did call you,” I said. “Frank said you were otherwise occupied, and we were running out of time. He decided to come help us.”

Grey looked down at the floor where Frank lay under his trench coat.

“You were nearly a statistic,” Grey said, removing his coat. “How many ogres were there?”

“Three,” Robert said as he dropped his shield and sat on the floor, exhausted. “Your lizard managed to dispatch them. What kind of lizard is he? I’ve never known any species to wield that kind of power.”

“He’s not a lizard,” Grey said, softly picking Frank up. “He’s a dragon. Don’t let him hear you call him a lizard. He kind of takes it personally.”

“He’s kind of small to be a dragon of any sort,” Robert said, peering at Frank. “Are you certain?”

“What I’m certain of is that he saved your lives tonight,” Grey said. “How did you even find this place?”

“Lucille informed us that the NYTF had discovered an energy anomaly at this location,” I said. “Wait, the NYTF. They’ll be here any moment now!”

“Here’s some friendly advice,” Grey said, putting on his trench coat. “Don’t be here when the NYTF arrives. It will complicate your life beyond anything you can imagine.”

“But the ogres?” I said .”We can’t just—?”

“What ogres?” Grey said, looking around the warehouse. “All I see is two ogre corpses and plenty of destroyed material. What do you see?”

“Nothing of merit,” Robert said. “Let’s go. It won’t do to have an altercation with the authorities.”

“I thought we were supposed to be helping the NYTF?” I said. “Why are we skulking away like criminals?”

“Because you will be the main suspects once they get here,” he said. “A renegade mage and his partner destroying the interior of a warehouse? They already deal with one Destructive Duo. They won’t be so accommodating with you two.”

“We didn’t destroy this place,” I said, defiantly. “That was Frank.”

“You mean this tiny, innocent-looking lizard?” Grey said, holding up Frank’s unconscious body. “You expect them to believe that little ole Frank here blasted this place to shreds?”

“Are you insinuating you would incriminate us?” Robert asked, upset. “You would lay this destruction at our feet?”

“No, never,” Grey said. “I would never do something like that.”

Robert sighed.

“That’s good to hear,” he said. “For a moment I thought you were a typical dark mage.”

“I wouldn’t need to,” Grey said. “The agents that first arrive on site would make the connection. One mage and his associate.” He pointed at us. “One destroyed warehouse with questionable corpses and chemicals. It almost writes itself. They would implicate you immediately and ask questions later…much later.”

“They wouldn’t dare,” Robert said. “Do they know who we are?”

“Not really, no.
