“Damn,” he mumbled under his breath as the cold hit him. He hadn’t been wrung out by a woman like that since— He recalled the few women whose beds he’d shared since Mary died. None of them had come close to firing him the way this lady doctor did. He thought about his compliant, gentle wife. He had truly loved her, he thought with the kind of tenderness that meant he wanted to move on.

He rubbed his hands together and tried to warm them with the heat of his breath. What would it be like, he wondered, when he bedded her completely? Because he knew he would, he had to. He couldn’t make the rest of this journey alongside her and not think about how she’d warmed so easily to his kiss and how she’d flared like dry kindling when he touched her.

He glanced back at the tent, then grabbed a handful of snow and buried his face in it.

Later, with both his temper and his ardor cooled, he returned to the tent with the half-empty tin of figs that had been tossed in the snow. He also carried a handful of dried moss and a bundle of twigs. “I thought you might need a fire to boil some water for whatever it is you doctors do.”

“Thank you.”

“Sure. I’ll get this going just outside the tent. That’ll make it easier for you. I found a small pot in the provisions on the sled. There’s not enough wood here for a rip-roaring fire, but—”

“It’ll do nicely.”

Relieved Aurelia hadn’t asked him to explain his subdued attitude, Clay built a fire and boiled some snow for water. He wasn’t about to tell her how easily she had reduced him to some kind of savage—not when she could so easily tame her own desires. He pictured the wisps of hair at the nape of her neck, the little hollow at the base of her throat, the softness of her lips, the fullness of her breasts. Then he grabbed another handful of snow.
