Chapter 8

RACHEL

The next morning, Rachel was a complete mess. She kept spilling her coffee, and Mia had to ask her three times where her headphones were before Rachel even heard her. She kissed Allegra. She hadn’t planned for it, of course. But in that precise moment, she hadn’t been able to resist. She’d had some experiences with other women before she met her ex-husband, but it had never felt like it did the night before. She had never wanted anyone as much as she wanted Allegra at that moment, man or woman.

Oh, this was bad. She was her daughter’s teacher, and Rachel didn’t really know her. She didn’t need any complications in her life right now. But she kind of wanted this particular complication. Allegra was just so fun, so nice and beautiful. Rachel looked at her daughter. What would Mia say if she started something with Allegra? She didn’t think her daughter would have a problem with her dating another woman, it was more the dating itself that Rachel was unsure about. It had just been them for the most part since the divorce.

But then again, her father had a new relationship and Mia was OK with that. Why shouldn’t she explore something like that for herself? If things progressed further she would have to have a talk with her daughter. Make sure she was okay with it all. No need to rush into things.

She headed into the kitchen, where Mia was watching videos on her laptop. Rachel bent down and kissed her daughter on the head.

“What are you watching?”

“Ballet videos,” Mia answered and turned her face from the screen. She looked a little bit nervous all of a sudden. “Would you maybe want to watch them with me?”

“Of course.” She sat down next to her. Mia’s whole face brightened. “What is this video?”

“Oh, it’s great,” Mia exclaimed. “It’s this famous performance of The Nutcracker.”

At least Rachel had heard of the Nutcracker before. “It looks really nice,” she said, unsure of what to comment on. “Do you know all the moves?”

Mia laughed a little. “No, but I want to learn them. I bet Allegra knows them though.”

The mention of Allegra sent a jolt through Rachel’s body. “I’m pretty sure she does. You’ll have to ask her sometime.”

“I will.” Mia clicked on another video. “I found this channel where this girl is teaching the viewers all the basics of ballet. It’s really good.”

Rachel watched as a young woman ran through some of the poses, talking through them as she danced. “Is this what you use to practice here at home?”

Mia nodded. “Yeah, she’s really good at explaining things, just like Allegra.”

Rachel felt warmth spread in her chest as she watched her daughter. Mia’s eyes were glued to the screen, and she didn’t know if she had ever seen her that excited about something before. Maybe it wasn’t such a bad thing for Mia to pursue dance for a few more years. She was only seven after all, and meeting Marie had shown her that there was no reason Mia couldn’t pursue other things as well.
