THIS STORY IS due tomorrow. I can only dwell and pace around for so long before I feel invaded by their memory, succubused by their desire projected toward me. And here I am on Dirtyroulette, settings on Puerto Rico, conducting research for my latest idea, my own story invaded by the handful of gooners awake at four a.m. also reaching for the small brown bottle between their legs or on their solar plexus and raising it to each nostril, my own story expanding exponentially through every faceless naked torso rubbing one out—but that’s not a story within a story, I keep freaking out about form—like this new window into an air-conditioned library, an older salt-and-pepper daddy like I like them, the camera upturned just to show some beard and a neck tattoo, a tattoo that starts to become more familiar with every hit of poppers, and I cover the trackpad in coconut oil as I stop to expand the image and, yes, that is Doctor Townshend’s octopus neck tattoo, that is his salt-and-pepper beard, this is the story I’ve been hoping to find this entire time. But I have to stop, I have to close the laptop and accept defeat. What are the chances. This island is entirely too small for comfort.

Perhaps I should write about Doctor Towns-hend …
