When Josh rode into St Joseph it was almost dusk. It had been a long ride and he, like John, had slept out in the open for the first time in a long time, but unlike John he found nothing uplifting or romantic in it. His bones ached from sleeping on the hard ground and the old bayonet wound from the war throbbed angrily.

He dismounted and hitched his horse outside the hotel. He entered and trudged over to the desk. He checked in, made arrangements for his horse to be taken to the livery stable and then asked the clerk if he knew John.

‘Captain Carshalton checked out almost a week ago, Mr Ramsey.’

‘Did he say where he was headed?’

‘No sir, I am afraid not.’

Josh sighed. To have missed him by that much was frustrating, but what on earth was he doing to be gone that long? This sounded a lot more than intelligence gathering. He had a sinking feeling that Connie was right to have been worried.

As he made to climb the stairs he became aware of an attractive red-haired woman watching. He shrugged it off as mere fancy and climbed the stairs to a hot bath.
