Even though Rey knew she would be there, she was not prepared to see Marty. She'd been on her mind all day while she shopped for a present for her, and it was only making her miserable. Her sweet, compassionate and, to be honest, sexy friend was about to leave her life at least on some level. It was true they would see each other at Ruby’s now and then, but Rey was not fooling herself. She would be less likely to go to the bar if she moved to the other side of the river. She would fade away from the group naturally. Thinking about it, Rey’s eyes burned with threatening tears. Crying was the last thing she wanted to have happen, so she quickly averted her eyes and followed closely behind Liza to block her view from the others.

Although she would typically go sit beside Marty, she purposefully did not. Being close to her would be too hard. Instead, she found the stool beside Liza at the farthest end of the bar. Only at the last second did she steal a glance at her roommate, sucking in a breath when she saw the crushed look on the woman's face. I'm hurting her, Rey thought. And really, she's done nothing. Rey’s mind went to Bethany, but that distraction was gone, and still, Rey was shutting Marty out. And now our friendship is probably over. It was all too much, and Rey waved for Kelly so she could order a drink.

“What you need, Rey?” Kelly asked.

“Yes, what do you need Rey?” Nikki chimed in with her usual killer smile. “Are you going to order us a round of shots?” Actually, a shot sounded good to Rey, and so she forced a laugh.

“Does that mean everyone’s up for tequila?” she asked the group and heard Allie suck in a breath, clearly knowing that Rey was on the verge of making some poor choices. But sometimes friends just had to let friends steer their own course.

“Shots it is,” Vivian said as she came out of her office, having overheard the conversation. “Not exactly a festive drink, but under the circumstances, I think it is perfect.”

“Is this about your surprise announcement?” Liza asked.

“It is,” Vivian replied with an unusually broad grin on her face. Rey noticed that the woman looked more excited than she had possibly ever seen her. The usually calm demeanor of the businesswoman was overwhelmed by an almost giddy expression.

“Don’t keep us in suspense,” Nikki said as Kelly set shot glasses full of the amber liquid on the bar. “Give us the news so we can make a toast.”

“Fair enough,” Vivian replied as she walked over and put her arm around Allie's waist to pull her close. “My fabulous, gifted, incredibly smart, and beautiful marketing person suggested I try and arranged for Ruby’s to be part of a New Year's Eve special on TV this year.”

Rey could not help but smile. She was proud of Allie and how far she’d come already with her own marketing firm.
