RICK KNEW it was a lousy idea, but he dialed Becca’s number anyway. So much for hanging back and giving her space. He couldn’t seem to help himself.

She picked up on the first ring.

“Hey, it’s Rick. I just wanted to make sure you were doing okay. I bet it’s been a rough couple of days.”

“It has. And Maya’s on a date with a new guy. I have to admit, I’m kind of jumpy.”

“Hopefully she picked a better guy this time.”

“I made sure she brought him in to meet me. None of that calling-her-on-her-cell-phone-from-the-car stuff. I was tempted to answer the door carrying Gabe’s baseball bat.”

He chuckled. “I’m not sure it would have the same effect coming from you.”

“Apparently you’ve forgotten the power of hormonal surges. I can be downright scary at times.”

“It’s all coming back to me.” He was also remembering the upswing of the hormonal surges, when his ex-wife had been particularly lustful.

No way could he think about that in terms of Becca’s pregnancy, because then he’d remember in detail what it had been like to make love with her.

“What should I do if she’s late again?” Becca’s voice drew him out of his reverie.

“Same thing as last time. You can call me and I’ll see what I can do to help.”

“I can’t keep calling you every time there’s a teen crisis in the Smith household. Remember, we’re supposed to be putting some distance between us.”

“I’m trying to forget.”

“You’re not making this easy, Rick.” Her chuckle told him she wasn’t upset.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Yes, you do. It’s better if I learn to stand on my own two feet. You’re really sweet to offer to help, but I need to do this on my own. Besides, you have a life to lead, too, and I’d never forgive myself if I interfered with that.”

“I called you tonight, remember? I’m the one interfering.”

“No, not interfering. Just caring. There’s a difference.”

If only she knew.

“So, are we good?”

“Yes.” She sighed. “Am I going to live through Maya’s teens? Did Kayla ever accuse you of ruining her life?”

“You’ll survive. And to answer your last question, yes, she told me that on a daily basis.”

“Do they grow out of it?”

“Kayla did. Now she nags me about my diet and cholesterol. I think I liked the complaining better.”

“I’m glad somebody’s keeping you on your toes. It’s only because she cares. I wish I’d nagged Gabe more.”

“You had no way of knowing.”

“It’s just one of a long line of what-ifs.”

Rick didn’t know what to say. He’d heard people tell her it was simply Gabe’s time to go, but that didn’t seem to be much comfort.

“Sometimes I wish I hadn’t insisted on all those pizza-and-wings stops, too,” he said. “I—”

“There’s my call waiting. It’s Maya. I better go.”

“Sure. Talk to ya later.”

“Rick?”

“Yeah?”

“Thanks for calling. It helped.”

“Anytime. Bye.”
