Mom limps into the kitchen. She wears a worn pink leotard, but her smile is light and easy. Jack hauls up bundles in butcher wrap from the fridge. He draws a mallet from a drawer and pounds a slab of red meat. With each blow, every loose thing on the countertop chimes and hops.

Mom shouts over the blows, “Where you two go, Olya?”

“To look at dogs,” I say.

“Why?” Mom says it like the idea is the most mysterious thing that has happened so far.

“Bird?” I say.

“Bird?” She looks around. “Where did dog go?”

“Not your concern, Ira,” Jack says.

She turns back to Jack, lands an arm on his shoulder. She says with such tenderness, such surprising tenderness, “C’mon, baby, what happened? Tell Ira.”

Jack stops carving. He sets down the knife and looks up at me. “Nothing goodle,” he says.

No helping it. I laugh out loud. Mom also tries for a laugh. But the green of her eyes has gone lonely. She stares at her feet, third position. “Some big friends now?”
