Staff Sergeant Blake Tisdale followed the actions of the other men when they were escorted from their pods. He mimicked their movements and allowed himself to be led around like a lamb as they were run through medical checkups and eventually armored up. He stared blankly forward as the armor was attached piece by piece. He fell into step and marched with the men as they were led to the armorer and weapons were issued.

It took him only a few moments to adapt to the heads-up display inside the helmet visor. He figured out quickly how to use his chin and jaw to activate different functions and scroll through options in the display. Once they were outside and about to load into a transport, he realized just how small the support staff appeared in comparison to him and the other warriors.

Blake stood at attention as a technician approached each man and activated their portable power supplies before removing the umbilical attached to their armor. The man barely reached mid-chest on him and had to tip-toe to reach the umbilical between their shoulders. The man turned and gave a thumbs-up to another technician who ordered them into the truck.

The voice came through the helmet and sounded like it originated inside his own mind. He fought the urge to jerk the helmet off and beat the annoying buzz out of his brain. He actually winced when the radio was shut off. He stared through his visor and noted that the other men made no indication of discomfort when the voice barked.

He held himself in check while they all boarded the transport. He sat with the rear group on the right bench, facing the first group. Each man sat at attention, their weapon gripped and held directly in front of them as though preparing to present them for inspection.

Without turning his head, he studied each man across from him. There were no names on their uniforms, but a series of numbers were painted across the right breast of their chest armor. Blake allowed the movement of the truck to shift him slightly forward. He used that motion to glance down the row of soldiers, noting that each man sat in order. He was directly across from T-103. Next to him was T-104. The next man down was T-105.

He could only guess the numbers of the other men.

Blake leaned forward slightly and glanced toward the front of the truck. A single technician sat behind the cab, his face buried in a digital notepad, his finger scrolling through lines of data.

He tried to get a total headcount but wasn’t able. He was certain that there were six soldiers sitting across from him and could only assume that there were six on his side as well since they all seemed to be facing another warrior.

Blake sighed and leaned back, allowing his weapon to lower to his lap. As he glanced toward the rear of the transport he felt the truck lurch and suddenly paved road was no longer under their tires.
