Alexâs arms around me feel so good, the heat from her body warming me. I didnât think to bring a sweater, and, while this place doesnât get the typical evening coastal fog Iâm used to from Northern California, itâs still cooling off now that the sunâs gone down.
Iâd like to stay like this forever, but, already, the group is starting to disperse. Itâs time to head back home.
Alex and I remain rooted to the spot until Aurélie calls back from the stairs, âAre you two lovebirds coming?â
I feel warmth rise to my cheeks. I guess it really is that obvious.
Weâre in this awkward stage where weâre not really a couple, but we are clearly dabbling in more than âjust friendsâ territory. And, apparently, my familyâs not oblivious to it.
Iâm not terribly worried about what they think. Iâve been out to them for years, so that partâs not a problemâbut I am still a bit self-conscious. Iâm sure, just like when Alex and I first met, my family can see whatâs between us more clearly than I do.
I feel like Iâm perpetually buzzed these days, my desire for Alex a smoldering fire that could turn into a blaze with only the slightest touchâor even just a look. I tried so hard at first to keep it in check, but Iâve begun to let caution slide.
What would happen if I fully let down my guard and indulged my cravings?
I shake my head, untangling myself from Alex, slipping back into my flip-flops that I left in the sand near the bottom of the staircase.
âCome on, letâs go.â
She makes a face, giving me the cutest little pout. âOnly because you promised me a massage.â She winks at me, then retrieves her own flip-flops and follows me up the stairs.
We lag behind the rest of the group, walking in silence for several minutes until Alex turns to me. âDo you remember when we first met, you asked me whether I believed in past lives?â
The question takes me aback. It seems to have come out of nowhere. Stopping in my tracks, I tilt my head. âSure, I do. Why do you ask?â
We both keep walking, the sky around us darkening as the last of the sunset fades.
âIâve been thinking about it. Wondering if I may have had any past lives.â
âYeah?â My heart beats faster. I donât know what sparked these reflections in Alex, but excitement fills me with the possibility that we could talk about this subject.
âDidnât you say you had some past life regressions with your friend Jeanne?â
I search my brain, trying to remember what I did and didnât share with Alex. I guess I must have told her this much at one pointâbut I know for certain I never told her about Lizzy and Claudia.
âYeah, I did.â
âI would like to do a regression with her. You think sheâd work with me?â
My mind is blown. Literally blown. Alex wants to do a past life regression? With Jeanne?
I try not to show my surprise. âOf course she would.
