Alex’s arms around me feel so good, the heat from her body warming me. I didn’t think to bring a sweater, and, while this place doesn’t get the typical evening coastal fog I’m used to from Northern California, it’s still cooling off now that the sun’s gone down.

I’d like to stay like this forever, but, already, the group is starting to disperse. It’s time to head back home.

Alex and I remain rooted to the spot until Aurélie calls back from the stairs, “Are you two lovebirds coming?”

I feel warmth rise to my cheeks. I guess it really is that obvious.

We’re in this awkward stage where we’re not really a couple, but we are clearly dabbling in more than “just friends” territory. And, apparently, my family’s not oblivious to it.

I’m not terribly worried about what they think. I’ve been out to them for years, so that part’s not a problem—but I am still a bit self-conscious. I’m sure, just like when Alex and I first met, my family can see what’s between us more clearly than I do.

I feel like I’m perpetually buzzed these days, my desire for Alex a smoldering fire that could turn into a blaze with only the slightest touch—or even just a look. I tried so hard at first to keep it in check, but I’ve begun to let caution slide.

What would happen if I fully let down my guard and indulged my cravings?

I shake my head, untangling myself from Alex, slipping back into my flip-flops that I left in the sand near the bottom of the staircase.

“Come on, let’s go.”

She makes a face, giving me the cutest little pout. “Only because you promised me a massage.” She winks at me, then retrieves her own flip-flops and follows me up the stairs.

We lag behind the rest of the group, walking in silence for several minutes until Alex turns to me. “Do you remember when we first met, you asked me whether I believed in past lives?”

The question takes me aback. It seems to have come out of nowhere. Stopping in my tracks, I tilt my head. “Sure, I do. Why do you ask?”

We both keep walking, the sky around us darkening as the last of the sunset fades.

“I’ve been thinking about it. Wondering if I may have had any past lives.”

“Yeah?” My heart beats faster. I don’t know what sparked these reflections in Alex, but excitement fills me with the possibility that we could talk about this subject.

“Didn’t you say you had some past life regressions with your friend Jeanne?”

I search my brain, trying to remember what I did and didn’t share with Alex. I guess I must have told her this much at one point—but I know for certain I never told her about Lizzy and Claudia.

“Yeah, I did.”

“I would like to do a regression with her. You think she’d work with me?”

My mind is blown. Literally blown. Alex wants to do a past life regression? With Jeanne?

I try not to show my surprise. “Of course she would.
