Chapter 11

THE GREAT INSULAII TOURNAMENT

PART 2

On Little Quelte, the westernmost island of Avlaim, there had only ever been six small villages. With no useful natural resources to be found on the island, its main export was fish.

The day was cloudy but this didn’t prevent the anglers from preparing to sail to check the nets and throw new ones.

“Dad!”

Sighing, the dorgan raised his head from the ropes he was knotting and looked up at his daughter on the pier. She was supposed to turn sixteen in a week and she already considered herself a grownup, ready to tackle the world.

“What is it?”

Instead of replying, the girl frowned, made a running jump, and leaped off the pier. With the grace of a cat, she landed on the deck and put her hands on her hips.

“I’m going with you!” she proclaimed.

“The same song and dance again, eh?”

“If you don’t want me to swim after you, then buy me an elixir!”

“Honey, you don’t need one.”

“I do! I’m the strongest cultivator in the village!” she exclaimed proudly. “With an elixir, I’ll reach the Mind Stage in no time! C’mon, dad! Please! I want to go see the world!”

“You’ll do just fine without it. Off you go now. It’s time for us to leave.”

“Dad! You won’t buy me the elixir? Fine! But why won’t you let me earn the money for it myself? I know it was you who persuaded the village chiefs not to give me any tasks.”

“Honey...” Her father sighed. “Your brothers—”

“I’m not like them!”

“I’m not risking losing another child!” he shouted in response. “I’m doing this to protect you!”

“You... You... I hate you!”

“Enough!” her father snarled. “Now... Get off the ship before I throw you overboard.”

“I’m not going anywhere!”

Having had enough of his daughter’s attitude, her father rolled up his sleeves and marched over to her. The girl avoided him for a while, playing cat and mouse, but he caught her eventually.

And just as he was about to throw her back onto the pier, a bright flash lit up everything around them. The air trembled and the ship heeled, almost capsizing, throwing several crewmen overboard.

“What’s happening?!” the dorgan shouted, protecting his daughter with his body.

When the ship finally leveled out, he crept over to the railing and looked overboard.

“What the...?” he muttered to himself in bewilderment.

The pier lay in shambles, having been reduced to a pile of floating planks. Near it stood a man in black and gold trousers. Save for a piece of light-colored cloth slung over his right shoulder, nothing was hiding the hole in his torso, which seemed to be illuminated by a crimson glow from within. His bare feet stood on the water as if on land, making no ripples. Three twisted horns of different lengths and shapes adorned his forehead, and protruding from his long snow-white hair were elongated ears with pointed tips. His arms were dark gray and streaked red, and his long fingers topped with sharp nails.

The dorgan didn’t feel the stranger’s aura, but he didn’t have to sense it to understand the immense power that the man held.
