While Pete is below, Susan lingers close to the boat, sometimes swimming under the hull to spare herself the heat of direct sun. Once or twice, she attempts to follow Pete down, but can’t reach the depths he is capable of pulling himself. She grins at him whenever he surfaces with a spoil from the deep: canned food, packeted sweets, a hairbrush, a pair of stainless nail scissors, a fork, anything remotely useable. Eventually, Pete comes up, breathless and blue in the face, and says, ‘That’s enough.’

As they help each other clamber back into the boat, Susan says, ‘Wish I could hold my breath that long. Then I could swim down deep with you.’

‘You will, one day. Just takes practice.’
