Eva wondered if King Henry had ever been licked?
Oh yeah, in places I don’t even want to think about!
What a frustrating situation. Not Lover Boy’s licked parts. That Eva was left watching these mercenaries while Strike Alpha and Isabel battled to the death. I don’t want to be a spy, I don’t want to be a saboteur either. I don’t want anything to do with these men . . .
She wanted Isabel.
Needed Isabel.
And take me right to the Curator’s workshop while you’re at it, my darling.
So there Eva was, waiting and waiting and waiting.
Better at it than she used to be, but still not her strong point.
She considered dealing with the mercenaries just for the entertainment value, but decided against it. She needed every bit of edge when tackling Isabel. Wasting half an hour of anima on these mercenaries would represent a horrible opportunity cost.
Isabel, I want Isabel. Eva’s usual sharp mind had gone murky on a drug called Revenge. Somewhere near her heart the Prism Wolf growled. Somewhere deeper the Darkness hissed in anticipation.
Outside the mill there was a series of crashes. An explosion of sorts, only not like any explosive Eva had ever heard. Aeromancer whipping debris around? Slashes of shadow still occasionally edged Eva’s vision. Not a pyromancer fireball for sure. Cryomancer throwing around some ice chunks, maybe?
Beat her, Lamprey.
Just enough to send her this way.
You can do it, jackass.
The mercenaries were enjoying whatever they could see from their positions, laughing and nodding at each other. The cardboard must not have covered everything.
But don’t actually win, Eva growled to herself in frustration. Or lose . . . Seriously, why couldn’t he just do as I asked him? Probably took it as an order and got all hostile, didn’t he? Seems the type. Ignoring that Eva had done just the same an hour ago when the situation was reversed . . .
Yup, ignoring that!
She could see another stairway across the hall. So, not just an entrance, but a hub between the mill and the office building. That leads to the upper floors, no doubt about it. Eva might not find actual torture chambers, but she would surely find the Curator’s stockpile of artifacts, anima, and quite a few more Anima Mad prisoners, if ones in cushier cells. Which would be where, however?
Come on, Isabel!
Come on, Lamprey!
Don’t make me come out there!
I have to kill these mercenaries to save you and I’m going to be pissed! It wasn’t natural for her to be pissed, but, well . . . she’d give it a try this time. This time . . . pissed didn’t begin to describe it.
Murderous.
That was it.
A new emotion to cover all the rest. Not a voice, just a feeling. Eva had killed, but she’d never wanted it, not like this. Oh, during school she had plenty of daydreams about kicking Hope in the face on any number of occasions, but not kill her. Even the Three Queens . . . not then. Maybe now. Along with Isabel.
