Next came a gratitude section: ‘Today I am grateful for …………………….’ I had often heard of keeping a Gratitude Journal, but this was as near as I ever came to it. I was surprised by how much I had to be grateful for. Next came meditation, and you recorded the time spent.

The filling in of all this could be very interesting, and made you stop and think back on your day.

Keeping the Captain’s Log was a nightly chore, but it did organise my thinking and planning. It placed great emphasis on daily meditation and zoned you in on the need to make time to fit it in every day, which was a big challenge. Up to then I had make vague efforts in that direction, but there was nothing vague about the Captain’s Log. Either you did it or you did not, and each night you had to answer to yourself. I found this a whole new experience because normally I function on impulse and a bit of a wing and a prayer. The Captain’s Log forced me to get my act together and get things done that otherwise would have been put on the long finger.

When I finally reached port I felt a huge sense of achievement that I had stuck with it and made it to the end. It was a voyage I hadn’t had to take, but once I read the Captain’s Log I was overwhelmed by a deep sense of curiosity as to how it might work. Also, one could not but be impressed by the person who had planned and written it.

And it had proved to be a voyage well worth taking. It had deepened my sense of gratitude for little things and caused me to live more in the now.
