Oh Shit! My head, what the hell?! My eyes open and scan a room I’ve never seen before. Grunting, I push up on my elbows to get a better look. “Where the hell am I?”

Pushing further up in someone else’s bed, I think my only blessing is I’m alone and my clothes are all still on. Wiping my eyes to get a clearer picture, I still don’t recognize a damn thing. Then it hits me as I see the cinder block walls and bad paneling. The MC, fuck! I must’ve passed out. I stand too quickly causing me to have to hold the wall for balance. This is probably the worst hangover of my life. After checking my pants for my wallet and keys, I open the door. It’s quiet, so I close the door behind me and try to make my escape unnoticed. Passing the kitchen, I hear,

“Sneaking out, Mr. Stern? Scared of goodbyes?”

Backstepping, I see Marcus drinking a cup of coffee and a boy sitting down eating pancakes.

“You have another cup of coffee?”

“Sure do. Why don’t you take a seat before you go home to that pretty wife who might have ideas about your dick.”

Immediately, I look at the boy, but he couldn’t care less about what was just said. I can’t help but think it’s because he’s used to this kind of language and talk. It’s sad really but he looks well taken care of; he’s clean and fed. When I sit down, he smiles at me with a mouth full of pancakes. Then, even with his mouth full he says,

“Hi, my name is Griff. What’s yours?”

“My name is Gabriel. It’s nice to meet you, Griff.”

He scrunches his nose and says, “That’s a weird name.”

Marcus scolds him, “That’s enough Griffin. Manners, remember them.”

The boy pouts and says, “Yes, Sir.”

Marcus passes me a cup of coffee and a plate of pancakes.

“Didn’t I see him last time I was here?”

“Yes, Griffin is my grandson. My only one.”

I look up when I hear the back-door screen slam. A big guy wearing a vest saying sergeant in arms comes walking in. He eyes me then scowls asking the kid,

“Hey Griff man, you ready? Let’s go or you’re going to be late.”

Griffin gets out his chair and slips on a backpack then waves bye to me.

Marcus yells when Griffin is halfway out the door, “Boy! You forget something?”

Griffin rolls his eyes and walks back in. “Paw-Paw, I’m a man now.”

“Bullshit.”

“Fine.” Griffin hugs him and says, “Love you Paw-Paw. Bye Mr. Gabriel.”

“Bye kid.”

He slams the screen door yelling back, “I’m a man!”

“What grade is he in?”

“Pre-K. He’s four.”

“Jesus, my son’s about to turn four. He’s a big kid. My brother Zander was like that.”

Marcus is laughing under his breath as I say, “Cute kid though.”

His laughter stops and looks me directly in the eyes. “He’s my life and the only thing I have left. I think we can help each other out. Drink your coffee Mr. Stern, we have some business to discuss.”
