Honorine, thirty-nine years old, was orphaned by the genocide. In 2013 she founded the Hope and Peace Foundation for youth between the ages of eighteen and thirty-five. Her foundation counted 420 members in 2016 and admits young adults from three categories: survivors of the genocide, children born from rape during the genocide, and children of people who committed acts of genocide. Honorine assesses as follows how transformative the collaborations between these three groups are: “First, in general, the children born of rape have found more hope because they have found people they can talk to about their pain. And for the survivors, they have found the heart to forgive the children of families who committed acts of genocide. As for the children who come from families in which people committed acts of genocide, they have started to feel less shameful of their family and to feel more accepted in society.”
Daphrose is a widow who lost all her children during the genocide and lived ashamed until she found a support group within AVEGA called Humura Nturi Wenyine, which means, “Do not be afraid, you are not alone.” She states, “Before I lived in the shadows amongst the other widows so that no one would find out that I no longer had children. . . . I thought I was the only person who lived in this country without any children. . . . I was inspired by what other women like me were doing with their lives. I saw how they lived, and how they were so patient, even with their little kids. And I also found the same patience.”
The final words here are those of Odette, a widow who also joined AVEGA’s Humura Nturi Wenyine: “When I am among others who are like me, I can offer my ideas while before I was uncomfortable talking with others. . . . I very slowly began to be healed. I regained love for life.”
