The Intruder released the baseball batâs handle. It stayed lodged in her mutilated vagina. The batâs knob was between her shins. Her crotch and thighs were covered in blood.
He leaned over her, slapped her battered face gently, thenâwith a mirthless smileâhe said, âGood job, girl, good job. I think my Ella heard us. I know she heard us. Sheâs on her way back to me right now. Oh, yeah, sheâll be running straight into my arms soon. Sheâs close. So, so, close. I can feel her. I hear her footsteps. I hear her breathing.â
Ella pulled her lips into her mouth and held her breath for a moment. She knew he was lyingâshe hadnât taken a single step since she entered the closet, after allâbut something inside of her told her to play it safe. Claire didnât react to the manâs voice or touch. She was alive but unresponsive. The agony had plunged her into a state of deep unconsciousness.
The Intruder grabbed his utility knife and wobbled to his feet. He took the shotgun from the bed, then walked over to the window.
âElla!â he said, projecting his voice rather than outright yelling. âI know you heard all of that. Play timeâs over. Itâs time to come back inside. Time to finish what we started.â
He waited for a response while surveilling the area. Ella debated with herself: Should I just let him do it? Would it be easier for everyone if I gave up? Should I try to fight him?
Self-preservation won that debate.
âNothing?â the Intruder said with a trace of bitterness. âAre you sure you want to keep doing it like this? Are you positive? If you continue to resist me, I will continue to hurt them. Are you still sure? Youâre positive? Okay, fine then. If you want to save the little piggies, you know where to find me. Clockâs ticking, Ella. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock...â
Lowering his voice, he kept repeating those two wordsâtick, tockâas he made his way back to Claire. He retracted the utility knifeâs blade, then put it in his belt.
He squatted next to his victim and said, âIâm sure sheâs on her way back right now if sheâs not here already. Sheâs just a little confused. Happens to all of us. I get confused sometimes, too, yâknow? But if she still wants to play... Iâll be back to fill your other holes with something else. You holler if you see her, okay?â
He gave her cheek another little slap, then walked away. Ella leaned forward and followed him with her eyes.
âEeeeâlla,â he said as he exited the room, dragging out the first syllable of her name. âEeeeâlla. Oh, Eeeeâlla, wonât you come out and play? Eeee...â
His voice petered out mid-word somewhere down the hall. Ella let out a wavering breath. She stayed still for a long period, too scared to move. She listened to every creak from the house and every whimper from the other victims, trying to pinpoint the Intruderâs exact location. She had already lost track of him, though.
