Chapter 40

The next morning, Sol wakes up at 5:00 a.m., an hour earlier than she set her alarm. She hates it when that happens because she feels like she can really use the sleep. But she takes the opportunity to write in her journal.

Dear God,

I guess I just keep saying the same thing—I can’t believe this is happening. Right now, I’m in the guest room at my sister Shyla’s house. A couple of months ago, I didn’t even know she existed and was related to me. Today is Janice’s surgery for the kidney transplant from Shyla’s cousin. I mean, my cousin too? Anyway, I’m so confused. I pray that all goes smoothly with the surgery! Janice was talking to me yesterday about putting me in her will. That kind of freaked me out! I mean, I’m glad to know the truth, but it’s not like we have a relationship. She’s still kind of like my friend’s mom. So help me to sort that out. I’m nervous about meeting the rest of the family. I mean, some of them didn’t even know about me! I guess it’s a little easier because so much time has passed. It’s not like I’m a child looking for a caretaker. So less pressure on them, I guess. I don’t know how to feel about it. Will they welcome me or snub me? I think Shyla’s affection for me will help with all of them, but I don’t really know. And we’ll be sitting in a hospital waiting room together all day? Again, I’m thankful that Shyla is talkative. Please help me today with my nerves! Help me to trust you. Today is not all about me. Bless Janice and Gordon today. Amen.
